U14 Cricket Team Win the Essex County Cup
Barking Abbey travelled to Loughton Cricket Club to replay the Essex County Final against Saffron Walden County High School. The two teams met at the end of the previous term to play this game which was unfortunately ended with no result due to adverse weather conditions. The mood within the group was focused in anticipation of a tough game.
Abbey won the toss and decided to bat first and amassing an incredible 259 runs from the 30 overs and losing only 3 wickets. Captain Osman Choudhry scored his first ever century remaining unbeaten on 139 runs from just 99 balls at the end of the innings. He was backed up by Bilaal Anwar (70 runs off 48 balls) and a cameo appearance from Numair Ali (28 runs off 22 balls).
This meant that SWCHS needed to score 260 runs to win the County Cup. This was a huge task for our opposition with our strong bowling attack restricting our opponents to low scoring overs. Eshun Kalley and Bilaal Anwar, in particular, were magnificent with the ball in hand; the latter taking two wickets. Saffron Walden could only manage 184 runs in the 30 overs which meant that Abbey won the trophy by 75 runs.
This was a fantastic achievement for a team that had lost narrowly in the final of the same competition two years previously and is a testament to the hard work that all members of the squad have put into progress. The Essex County title has now been added to their London Cup titles and Indoor County title. All members of the team contributed towards winning the competition.
