Boys Football Academy cruise into second semi-final of the season
Barking Abbey’s football academy squad make it two semi-finals to look forward to in 2022!
Barking Abbey Football Academy produced a fantastic performance as they continue in their quest to retain the Coomer cup that they won over two years ago!! It is only from the start of this 2021 season that the boys have been allowed to attempt to retain the Coomer Cup due to the Covid 19 pandemic!
It was a long journey up to West cliff Grammar school, Southend on Sea but the academy boys applied themselves well and started the match brightly, Abbey were threatening the Westcliff goal immediately by forcing early pressure on the Westcliff defence!
It was in the 10th minute that Abbey had their break though when a cross flashed across the Westcliff goalmouth, fortunately for Abbey a Westcliff defender could only manage to kick the attempted clearance into his own goal! Abbey was to make it 2-0 in the 21st minute when Tochi Ubani picked up the ball on the right wing and cut in onto his left foot which enabled him to curl a superb 30 yarder past the rooted Westcliff keeper who could only watch as the ball flew into his top left-hand corner.
Westcliff pulled one back when a mix up between Abbey’s Centre back and keeper allowed the Westcliff striker to nip in and score. However, Abbey responded Three minutes in to the second half, when Abbey completed a 10-man passing move before Jayden Browne finished off a great Mohammad Madour cross to make it 3-1.
Abbey pressed for another and were rewarded, when Tochi Ubani let fly with shot from just inside the 18-yard box, fortunately it took a small deflection that directed the ball to the top corner to take the tie to 4-1 and allow Abbey to move onto the Semi-finals. Abbey will play the semi-final at Seevic Storm on the 2nd March 2022.
