Department Overview
Barking Abbey were crowned “Specialist Sports College of The Year 2011” by The Daily Telegraph. This followed the previous accolade of “State Sports School of the Year 2010” by the School Sport magazine. We have consistently ranked in the top 30 State Sport schools every year since its conception as an award.
We have worked in partnership with many schools to share areas of good practice, including assisting schools in Barking & Dagenham, Newham and Kent with the development of BTEC programmes. We have supported schools in their bid to become sports colleges and have assisted schools in the development of elite sporting academies.
Barking Abbey is committed to providing high quality physical education for all students. Our aim is to provide all students with the physical literacy to enable them to continue lifelong participation in sport and exercise. This includes many leadership opportunities.
We are also committed to an extensive extracurricular programme providing opportunities for students to compete in local, county and national events.
Curriculum Intent
Physical Education at Barking Abbey School aims to deliver a high-quality curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Opportunities will be provided to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as resilience, commitment, respect and team work.
PE aims to develop the physical, social and mental well-being of our students. We aim to provide an engaging and challenging curriculum that allows (all) students to achieve beyond their expectations. To offer excellent opportunities to develop a healthy life-long love of physical activity. We want all students to feel they belong as part of a team, believe in their healthy potential and become as physically, socially and emotionally well as they can be. We do this by developing the attitudes, skills and knowledge required to participate in traditional local sports and new activities providing memorable experiences throughout a student’s journey within Physical Education.
The aim of the PE team builds on the whole school ethos by enabling students to demonstrate:
- Bravery to learn from mistakes
- Excellence in persevering to achieve their potential
- Self discipline to demonstrate the resilience required to overcome challenges
- Team BA to belong and be a valuable contributor in PE
Curriculum Implementation
Students will experience a variety of opportunities and experiences that support this vision, challenging them both inside and outside the classroom. They will focus on improving their fitness, health and well-being through knowledge and application. They can complement this by experiencing a programme of awards, qualifications and memorable learning experiences. Students will develop physical, technical and tactical sporting skills; enhanced by an embedded focus on mental skills such as resilience, determination and confidence. We aim to ensure all students leave the school possessing the skills, motivation and knowledge to enjoy a lifelong engagement with sport and physical activity. We trust that our broad and innovative PE curriculum will allow students to develop their love of movement and sport well beyond their time with us leading some of the students to pursue an elite performance pathway in Barking Abbey Sports Academies or in external sports clubs.
KS5
In years 12/13 students will study for the BTEC National in Sport to the equivalent of 1,2 or 3 A-Levels, or A-Level PE.
Regular practical and outstanding classroom teaching and learning allows for the study of some, or all, of the following: anatomy and physiology, fitness training and programming, sports leadership, psychology, sports development, professional development, skill acquisition, the business of sport and practical sports performance, research in sport.
